This set of four interactive activities from the Languages online resource introduces students to the words, culturally appropriate expressions and structures required to address envelopes correctly and write simple letters, including letters to penpals. Also included is practice in identifying the postal address of letters addressed to key Indonesian locations. Students apply both listening and reading skills to complete drag-and-drop activities and simple written reproductions following authentic models. Instructions in English, immediate feedback and answers with translations are provided, as well as resources for teachers including additional printable activities.

Educational value
  • This is a valuable interactive resource for Indonesian language learning at beginners level, and supports the Communicating and Understanding strands of the Australian Curriculum. It may support the Reciprocating strand if teachers work with learners to elicit deeper cultural meaning. The activities are suitable for primary and secondary students.
  • The resource enables students to develop listening and reading skills, and builds on prior knowledge to recognise known words in new contexts.
  • Culturally sound models and some geography revision is provided to help students address envelopes, write simple letters and identify postal addresses in the target language.
  • The development of students' literacy skills in written correspondence in their own first language is supported by comparing with Indonesian examples.
  • Audio support, answers and translations, and printable activities for teachers are included.
